New Year Safety Tips

As we enter a new year, let’s prioritize safety in every aspect of our work and celebrations. Here are some key tips to help ensure a safe and productive year ahead:

Machine Safety

  • Inspect all machinery and safety guards before resuming operations.

  • Confirm that safety features are functioning correctly and meet compliance standards.

  • Schedule training sessions to refresh workers on machine safety protocols.

  • Maintain clean, organized workspaces to reduce hazards.

SAFETY SHIELDS: It's that time of year to do a walk-through of all the machines and inspect their safety features. Take note of cracked, broken, burnt, cloudy, or dirty safety shields. Replacing shields that operators can no longer see through regularly is crucial. A shield you can't see through invites someone to remove it altogether!

Contact us if you need replacement polycarbonate or glass shields.

Do you have polycarbonate shields that crack quickly? You may be affected by environmental stress cracking (ESC).

TEST SAFETY INTERLOCKS: Open safety guard doors that are supposed to be interlocked to see if machines can start. Ensure that nobody has bypassed safety interlocks and they are in good working order. Fix or replace any malfunctioning or bypassed interlocks. Train operators on the importance of safetyguarding interlocks.

Ferndale Safety can help with replacement safety interlock switches.

KEEP IT CLEAN: The end of the year is a great time to do some housekeeping! Clean around machinery. Let's avoid any slips or falls due to clutter!

VERIFY WORK LIGHTING: Workplace lighting is often overlooked. A broken work light or areas with shadows strain the operator's eyes and encourage the removal of safety shields. Light meters are inexpensive tools you can buy on Amazon.

Adding high-intensity LED work lights can drastically affect safety and productivity!

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.56 &  ANSI A11.1-1965, R1970 are nationally recognized standards for industrial lighting that outline minimum lighting requirements for different types of workspaces.

Here are some recommended foot-candle (lux) levels:

  • Industrial Assembly of large items to small, fine assembly 30-100fc (322-1076 lux)
  • Industrial, Manufacturing 50fc (538 lux)
  • Commercial office: 40fc (430 lux)
  • Lunch & break room: 15fc (161 lux)
  • Warehousing & storage: 10-20fc (107-215 lux)
  • Warehousing & storage with small labels to read: 30fc (322 lux)
  • Warehouse aisles: 20fc (215 lux)
  • Lobbies, corridors, and stairwells: 25fc (269 lux)

Your safety and success are our top priorities. Thank you for choosing Ferndale Safety as your partner in industrial machine safeguarding. We look forward to a productive and secure 2025.
